With modern technology, a global exchange of goods and ideas can happen at the click of a button. But what about 2,000 years ago? Shannon Harris Castelo unfolds the history of the 5,000-mile Silk Road, a network of multiple routes that used the common language of commerce to connect the world's major settlements, thread by thread.

I think the video clearly explains how the Silk Road changed trade and how globalization happened. From an international perspective it's necessary to analyze the economic, political and social antecedents that made the world as we know it today.

Some says everything was started from Asia. Truth may hurt but as a matter of fact, there is genetic evidence that the white European were Indian albinos driven out in those days when leprosy is considered a curse. The white people are thus not a race but mutated Oculocutaneous Albinos type 2. European DNA matches with Dravidians of India namely Haplo group R. Indian albinos migrated into northern Europe through central Asia because they had to flee the devastating effects of sunny climate in their Indian homeland (this explains the term Indo-European).

    Hi TED-Ed.
I really enjoy your videos and I'm grateful for them, for their content and all the hard work that goes into them.
So it's with the greatest respect that I feel I must point out that your remark about Islam's spread to South Asia, where it "blended with native beliefs and led to new faiths like Sikhism" is wholly misleading.
As a practising Sikh it would be remiss of me not to state that this common idea of Sikhism being a mish-mash of Hindu and Muslim traditions is a fallacy, not to mention a little insulting, since it denies Sikhs their own authentic identity and agency as devotees of a religion that is its own.
I know it wasn't deliberate, I'm not offended... you teach me stuff all the time, I hope I've been able to return the favour.
Thank you and keep up the excellent work.

The idea of Closed China during Ming Dysnasty is false. They still maintained international trade but via private businessmen as national controlled trade proved inefficient.
Just because Ming didn't send out more expedition fleets doesn't mean they didn't realize how lucrative the trade with regions explored were.

Sunny shah 9 months ago +2

@Theneptubers It's the same thing dude.
India = Hindustan. And it's not Hindustan, it was called Bharat by ancient Indians. Hindustan was used by Persians and Mughals.
The Greeks referred to entire South Asia as India.
      Hence the name Indian Ocean.

No, it originated in India, Nepal didn't exist 2,000 years ago, the whole South Asia was labeled Indian Subcontinent.
Buddha himself was a Hindu before being enlightened. He was born in what is now today Nepal, but he became the Buddha in India, and started Buddhism from India.
