Today’s Republican Party opposes big government. It’s culturally conservative. Its demographic support is strongest among white voters, and it usually dominates elections in the South. And its 2016 presidential nominee has been heavily criticized for inciting racial tensions.
But things weren’t always this way.
Over the past 160 or so years, the party has undergone a remarkable transformation from the party of Abraham Lincoln… to the party of Donald Trump.

Why is supporting Legal and orderly Immigration process racist? FYI-Most of the Democratic Party voters or "Electors" is White. IF ALL WHITES supported the Republican Party, even at current immigration trends, the GOP would dominate politics for the next few decades without any hiccups. I'm just saying, race-based politics is part of Cultural Marxism which ALWAYS calls for an authoritarian government to stick it to the "privileged" establishment while establishing a new one.

    Something never changed,
    1) Southern states are always poor regardless of the party(democrats then, republican now) they support.
    2) Northern states are always controlled by businesses regardless of the party(republican then, democrats now) they support.

I couldn't agree more. The Republican party needs to go back to their roots and elect people like Honest Abe again. Here's one of my favorite quotes from Lincoln: "I am not nor ever have been in favor of the social and political equality of the white and black races: that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters of the free negroes, or jurors, or qualifying them to hold office or having them to marry with white people…. I as much as any other man am in favor of the superior position being assigned to the white man."

@Kay C No, the racists never switched parties. Looking at the percentage, more Republicans supported the Civil Rights Act in the 1960s than Democrats.

    • Kay C

The racist switched parties... The south was Red during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. Majority of us vote opposite of the South, and we, like all other Americans, vote our interest and that just happened to be for Civil Rights.

  • J.J. Lukas
    J.J. Lukas 5 days ago

You can't skip from 1860s to 1920s and totally ignore how the parties essentially switched titles. Lincoln's party was in favor or equality, while the Southern Democrats were racists ans white supremacists. Abe Lincoln would be on thew side of Bernie in the present day.

What's sad is the GOP is for the rich yet they trick their voters into thinking it's all about race and that the liberals [elites] are the rich ones. That tax cuts are good and the reason we have to cut tax funded services is the minorities abusing the system.

  • Christophe Breland
Christophe Breland 6 days ago +2

It's not that the White southern voters didn't like their party's policy it was the "southern strategy" where the Republicans campaigned mainly on racial issues like segregation which evolved into dog whistles Reagan's welfare queen.

I don't think it was the "big government" ideology that had anything to do with this. Lyndon Johnson made a political decision to give black voters their due rights, so Blacks switched to the new party way of thinking that gave them a chance, instead of the Barry Goldwater's view of holding them back. Goldwater didn't care about "big government" he opposed racial equality. The whites than switched in the name of "big government" but really innate racism to the Republican ideology. This video makes an incorrect premise.

If this happens We The Majority of the Voters must turn this spear against the Democrats to make it something that will hand them the rope they diverse. It will happen if we wish it hard enough. I see that Booker got a serving he did not predict , the next will be ??? However they all will have to choke down there own nastiness what ever that will be.

The parties switched in the 1960’s when the democrats took control and gave rights to blacks and minorities so since then till now more minorities are democrats. If Abraham Lincoln was alive to today he would be a democrat because he gave African Americans freedom from slavery. I can see Abraham Lincoln shaking obama hand and being proud of him!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the only reason Franklin D Roosevelt chose to run as a Democrat instead of a Republican was to stand out from Teddy Roosevelt who he was distantly related to.

    • b.williams
      b.williams 10 days ago +1

I don't believe this is true. For one thing, FDR's father was a democrat. But it's also worth noting that within the quarter of a century between the end of Teddy's presidency and the beginning of FDR's presidency, the party ideals had already begun shifting. This is because after Teddy's second term, he wanted Taft (his Secretary of War) to take over as president in 1908 and continue to work his will as president. With Teddy's endorsement, Taft won, but turned out to be much less progressive and much less effective than Teddy had hoped for. So when the 1912 election came around, Teddy ran against him. Taft won the republican nomination, so Teddy had to run third party, and in doing so, took most if not all progressives with him out of the Republican Party. So the Republican party had become MUCH less progressive by the time FDR ran fro president. Also, trying to "stand out" or distance himself from Teddy would have been a terrible move, since Teddy offered him name recognition and was very beloved by many, being the only third party candidate to win more votes than one of the two major parties in 1912.
