I've had the rokform for 2 years on my note 8. It's served me well however I still find myself fumbling getting it on and off the mount. The magnet pulls the phone and makes aligning it a bitch sometimes. I've also had the mounting tabs break twice on the mount itself.(which rokform replaced without hassle) Now rokform has yet to release a case for the note 10 plus and I find myself considering the quadlock. Hoping its easier to remove and mount on the motorcycle mount for taking a quick photo while riding.

Sidenote, I dislike the tactile feel of the buttons on the rokform. They're too smooth and it's beyond annoying.

Thinking of going quadlock this time around.

Bought the Quad Lock for my Note 9. One of the tabs of the mount broke off at 70mph and I had to replace my screen. So less than a month in I was out $250 to repair and my camera doesn't work like it used to.

You get an xgrip from Ram Mount and it's the last mount you will ever buy.
Took mine 90 mph on a naked bike and no issues.

    • diamondheat9
      diamondheat9 11 days ago +1

The x grip has been solid for me and my phone never moves but I do have a decent case on it. I wonder if people ride with a bare phone in an x mount. Riding with your phone fully naked on the outside of a motorcycle is just asinine.

@Gideon R My only guess is user error. I've used RAM Mounts WAY before the "X" grip, but have used the "X" grip since it first came out (about the time of the iPhone 6) and the only way I can see a phone coming off is if someone has one of those "buttons" that stick on back.
My phones have all had cases and no issues.

I dont care about the price but I want whichever one locks my phone on my bike better , does the rol lock actually lock the phone in like the rock lock ? The one with the blue button seems to lock it in place making it impossible to fall or vibrate off your bars . Does the rok form do that as well ?

If the Rokform was about $50,I'd buy it. That price point is just to high. My RAM mount works fine. No tools necessary if I want to take it off and relocate. I never need to use that extra piece in the back to stretch over the corners, but will on longer rides. Only issue I've had is losing one of the rubber pads that holds the phone. For $8 i received four more. I'm up to $30 with the replacement pads. Very easy for a lot of on/off ride days. It works with whatever case I have on my phone. Downside, sometimes need adjustment because the swivel might loosen up, but usually one twist around and it's good. Aesthetically, I don't think any mounts look good.

Great comparison review - exactly what I was looking for, as I am considering one of these mounts. 2 questions:
    1) As this review is a year old, are you still happy | using the Rockform?
    2) Have you encountered any issues with the magnetized case screwing anything up (like credit cards, train passes, etc.)

The cases are made to fit one phone model. Also more exotic models, other than the current and previous Apple/Samsung devices are most likely not to be covered. The Ram X-Grip is tougher than most people may think. I have been using it on a motorcycle on gnarly offroad tracks and the heavy near 300g phone never came off the mount. And I haven't even used the rubber tether to secure the phone. At the cost of the rockform you could actually get yourself a rugged phone, which is then water and shock proof.

The magnets in the rokform cases are removable, you do not need to use the case with the magnet, not sure why he didn't specify this.

  • Lodewijk Engel
    Lodewijk Engel 7 months ago

I've used the Rokform for a year (Feb 2018) and it has never come off my motorcycle, and I commute daily. If you're thinking on picking up the Rokform, there is one big issue. I never thought the magnet in the case should not harm my phone but it does. I started having issues with my camera and it wouldn't zoom and stay out of focus, I could not figure it out until I stopped using the Rokform case and the issue disappeared. Now I just use the case when it's mounted on my bike and remove it when not riding, and I will not use the case for my future phones.

    Quality Review!
Quad Lock must have changed their prices in USA - Quad Lock does not include the Puncho, thats an optional add on for +$25. Quad Lock $69.90 is for the Mirror mount, $79.90 for the Motorcycle handlebar mount + $25 for Puncho if you want it. Still not a bad option for $105.00 for a full kit or $79.90 without the puncho.

I used QuadLock for almost a year now and find myself looking for something else for one main reason: The composite locking face wears and allows lateral play over just a couple of months of constant use. Now, to their defense, QuadLock will send you a replacement because their customer service is great. However, its just too much of an inconvenience to have to email them....wait...swap it out...only to have to repeat the process a few months later. It would be awesome if they sold these parts on their site...but unfortunately they do not. Bummer. I may have to give Rockform a go just because of the all metal mounting surfaces. Great review and solid pro/con for both. Thanks!

    • Squid On Two
Squid On Two 4 months ago

Yeah this same thing has happened to me TWICE - now I know that the bigger and heavier the phone - the faster the lock face wears away with that white residue and your phone just gets less and less secure. Switching to RokForm is the plan soon - but I haven't seen anyone point out if the "lock face" on RokForm is aluminum or plastic...?

What a fantastic review, shot & written & edited well, very fair.
I got a Quad Lock setup a year ago for bike, bicycle, windshields, house, and, on Black Friday (at their site), the desk mount (w/o wireless charger as I have a 6s Plus. All to say that I'm all-in.
I found that of the things you don't like about Quad Lock (the non-flat back, the side buttons, the default *blue* lever lock) the first two have never occurred to me and don't bother me but the need to replace the blue lever with the black one I want really does. I'm about to change out the lever colors and resent not having the color option to start with -- or maybe if I wrote and asked them at the start they would have subbed in the color/s I want.
Anyway, I also like the rounded corners on the QL case better, and everything feels *very* solid, and well-engineered, and the phone clicks in very solidly, as you say. Also the price on the full suite of QL items feels very premium and I don't have the budget or inclination to spend over twice as much for the metal Rockform.
The QL stuff I got has zero wear after all the time I've had it. The click-on and off is solid. Am very happy I got it all.
Both Rockform and Quad Lock are good choices. Both are expensive. These companies are making bank, that's for damn sure.

I returned both because of the cases.
The Quadlock "bulge" in the back was a deal breaker for the same reason, it also was not compatible with ANY car magnet. The Rokform geniuses put the magnet in the phone case which ruined all my CC's, and hotel key. Just dumb. Also not being able to landscape a phone is just dumb. Great review!
