Boris Johnson: Why the EU is like a lobster

  • The Mayor of London looks back on his time as the Telegraph's Brussels correspondent - and reflects on the frustrations and foibles of the European Union
Boris Johnson was posted to Brussels as the newspaper's bureau chief aged 24 - serving in the role from 1989 to 1994.
He jokes that he always had the same introduction ready and waiting: "Britain stood alone last night as...", before adding anything from "Europe proceeded with plans to abolish the prawn cocktail crisp" or "[proceeded to] abolish the curved cucumber."
He also recalls the "naked and blatant hypocrisy" he witnessed from the British government, in their tendency to say one thing around the negotiating table and another to the British press corps. Mr Johnson says that "even Mrs Thatcher...and her immediate advisers could be quite tricksy about what was really going on."
Watch his reflections on what journalism was like without the intrusion of the mobile phone, hear his thoughts on what went wrong for the Euro - and most importantly of all, find out why the EU is really like "a lobster...with a butter sauce."

It's all smoke and mirrors, no deal will be a economic disaster, and if the UK leaves with out one, what will the 1st thing the EU will want as a precursor to any trade deal?

Subbed bc of Boris. Man, I love this man, man!

  • That Fart Of Doom meant:-

I like Boris and I am hoping he can return some value back into Parliament. A Parliament which, quite frankly, had been hollowed out by a terrible number quislings who have destroyed my faith in the continuation of the existence of common law politics.
Hopefully the system will become rather more real again and less of a meaningless TV show of MP's working for the EU, who vote repeatedly against their own constituents.

What about the Good Friday Agreement? The EU is a good place to be. He and his cunning co-evils just want to protect their stash of cash. hidden away offshore, to avoid paying their fair share of tax.

So well explained, this man is so on the right path, through experience and the ability to adapt to get the best for the U.K. to set an example for other E.U. members/countries to succeed, for the benefit of all citizens. If the E.U. is really a positive working doctrine why are there so many problems? ask ourselves? These so called top decision makers/ at the top of the E.U. tree are not so clever, please listen to your own ,experienced common sense, on what is best for everyone.

This "we won the war" Empire talk is so o sickening and so stuck, and someone stuck up and full of victory verve like Boris fits in perfectly, boisterously bouncing head on down a dead end and taking the country with him. He s more likeable and interesting to listen to than dumb Donald, but not less dangerous. Trust him we cannot. And this interviewer is obviously of his opinion, say what he may...

We needed somebody who understands the futility and weakness of the Eu and it seems now the Eu fear we have such a person. They know we have Boris who will not lose and we also have Farage as an additional safety net. We won the war and we will win the political and economic war. The Eu is a false empire and all false empires fail, collapsing and imploding and resigned to the history books best forgotten.

    In heaven,
    the cops are British,
    the mechanics are German,
    the chefs are French,
    the lovers are Italian,
and management is provided by the Swiss.

    In hell,
    the cops are German,
    the mechanics are French,
    the chefs are British,
    the lovers are Swiss,
and it's all under Italian management.

In the US they say anyone can become the President, and that’s the problem. It seems the same now applies to the UK, if this real life Rowley Birkin becomes PM. What a choice between him, Steptoe Corbyn and some even less credible protest parties. It’s not just Brexit that needs a reset, it’s the whole democratic system.

100% behind Boris Johnson with his honest facts about the EU.
HE would make a good Prime Minister, the only problem would be, his opposition parties.
TOO MANY VOICES CREATES LACKNESS AND UNDEFIND REASONING TOWARDS PROGRESSION TO LEAD THIS COUNTRY FORWARD.
THE WHOLE PARLIAMENTARY SYSTEM NEEDS SWEEPING FROM THE OLD COBWEBS THAT CLUTTER UP ANY SENSIBILITIES AND LOGICAL DIRECTIONS TOWARDS PROGRESS.

He's taking to a camera, not us! I would love to believe he will take us out of the EU but I no longer have any faith in this government or those in it.
The EU is the precursor to global government and it's exactly what the elite wish for.
The plans for England and the UK if we remain in the EU would be devastating and if the British people were fully aware of the EU plans, they would be screaming to get out yesterday.

  • Isaac Joseph

I do believe we can stay in Europe and get the changes we need once it will benefit all and not just us (GB) Great Britain.

    • John Towers
      John Towers 3 months ago

and how exactly would we do that ? The EU is on a path to ever further integration a path that has to lead ultimately to a federal Europe. doing so is not an option for the EU its a necessity for it to survive. So at best staying in... we might slow it down a decade...maybe... the the result will still be the same.
All veto's are planned on being phased out in preference to qualified majority voting. so once we hit that point Britain will no longer be able to gum up the process as it has for the last couple of decades.
The EU was set to either Federalize or Collapse the moment it created the Euro, it became only a matter of time which of these two events will happen first.

In the Treaty of Rome, a year before we found ourselves in the EEC on the 1st January 1973, it has had three little words added to it, to whatever EEC/EU legislation we receive, {Without Further Enactment), which means to me, whatever laws coming from the EU now and this would have been happening for at least 46 years, are just excepted and enacted, probably without even being looked at and checked most of the time.
