I Gave Gamestop a Second Chance - Another Refurbished PS4

  • Published on Jun 14, 2019
  • I Gave Gamestop a Second Chance - Another Refurbished PS4. I got a call from a GameStop manager not long after my first video reviewing the GameStop refurbished PS4 I bought. GameStop told me they have been working to improve their refurbishing process so I thought it was only fair to give them a second chance. This second GameStop refurbished PS4 was noticeably better than the first but unfortunately still not as good as I was hoping.

About This Video: A couple months ago I bought a refurbished PS4 from GameStop and made a video showing what it was like - which was not good. Now I've purchased another GameStop refurbished PS4 and will show you what I found. The first negative is that they seem to have sanded part of the top cover and also the controller. However, the console does work normally and doesn't smell bad (like the last one). When I opened the PS4 up it looked pretty clean inside and also had new thermal paste but it was missing a thermal pad for one of the RAM chips. So easily better than the last one which was nice to see.

This console is still in a pretty bad shape for it to be called "refurbished"... and the new thermal paste job looks awful.
I wouldn't pay more than $125 for it.

I wonder if it's possible someone etched something into the PS4 and that's why it's sanded down and could've done the same to the controller

acetone or a similar solvent could explain the "sanded" look. if they use a chemical to wipe it off this could cause that look. its not necessarily sanding

    GameStop refurb.
All the same sanding scuffs too when I set it up before gifting it.

I bought a refurbished from them and it went to hell right at warranty time so they would not stand behind it. I will never buy refurbished from them again. I would have been better off buying new with a full and extended warranty.

These videos don't reflect my experience but it goes to show what a gamble it is buying used from GameStop. my PS4 Slim was bought less than a year after it came out and was basically brand new. no scuffs, no scratches, control was MINT, Couldn't be happier. I suggest doing what I did, trying to buy the newest interation shortly after launch. it'll cost more, but odds are it'll be nearly new for significant savings.

8:01 on the underside of the board, it looks like they left some uncleaned flux.

its most likely that acetone was used to clean the console instead of ipa especialy on the high gloss parts, i accidentally used acetone on the top removable part and it stripped the shine off and it looked sanded afterwards

  • Switchbeck
    Switchbeck 10 days ago

If the controller had any kind of warranty, gamestop probably just claimed the controller as defect and sent in the rating plate on the back to get a new one. Im not sure entirely how it works but if those being missing is common, then its something along those lines

I got a premium refurb Wii-U from Gamestop and had to exchange it 7 times before I got one that worked. Most did not read disks and red light of death within 30 days. Ultimately they gave me a trade in instead of a refurb, and that is the one that worked. Nintendo was so frustrated in all of my calls to transfer my NNID to all of these new consoles that they just said, if this one fails just send it to us for repairs instead of returning it to Gamestop.

There's the possibility that the console and the controller had decals and the sanding was probably to get off the dried adhesives

I wanted to buy a xbox 360 a few years back so I went to gamestop to see if they had one. I went up to the counter and asked about it and they went and brought out this really dirty one and tried to sell it to me. I looked at it for about 30 secs and asked was this refurbished and the person said yes so I was like then why is it so dirty so the person apologized and told me they grabbed the wrong one and went and brought out a different one and it was just as dirty as the other one and I just laughed and said well this one looks dirty too and said no thanks and left. I went to another game place and bought one so yea, I never trusted them after that experience.

Do you check that the analog sticks don't drift? That's a BIG problem with ps4 controllers. I know you test a lot of things off camera and I was just curious.

Seems to me like they went above and beyond for you only. If it wasn't a video they thought people would see, they wouldn't have tried that hard to get you a good console. Seems like an attempt to make people believe their refurbs will work.

Way back when, I bought a refurbished Xbox360. Got the RROD within a month, but I should've expected it. Gamestop is essentially a pawn shop, I wish there was an OOGIE Games down here(FL), their refurbished systems are so much better and they have no problem opening the system up if you (politely!) Ask them to.
Gamestop is essentially just going down hill; it has been for years. They're losing customers because of situations like your first experience, you're an influencer so it was corrected, but instead of responding and owning up to it with the rest of us they just give a shrug and offer a trade in for less than half of what was had paid.
Its a crappy situation but it's to be expected. I guarantee that GameStop will be gone in the next 10-15 years, their operations are.. Shady at best.
Ive had multiple issues with controllers, systems, games, etc. Just be careful folks.. And save your damn receipts.

I see everyone commenting "just pay extra $30 for new." I work at a Gamestop, so let me tell you this, once you open a new console, it's yours unless you trade it in, preowned consoles have 7 day return policy for whatever reason. Say you aren't a fan of the feel of the ps4 dualshock controller. Bring back the system no questions asked. And more often than not, it's not $30. For some systems it's $50-$80 so sometimes bigger savings

@UnfazedMonkey if you don't like it. I had a guy buy a xbox 1 x and traded it in 2 weeks later because it wasn't like his ps4. He lost over $200 because he bought new.

I personally won't purchase a system that is scratched up, or sanded down. I don't know why they can't just replace the top if it's all scratched up. I think game stop is sloppy and non caring about what we get! I know I've experienced really dirty and problematic systems from GS. I'm not going to waist my time and money for GS anymore. Thanks for your video, now I know it wasn't just me!

The term refurbished means made to look new again but In the retail market it's a falsehood. So long as the device is working that would be considered refurbished to them. I'd never buy refurbished as their standards are way too low.

I enjoyed this video and your other videos very much. Very well done, thorough, informative, fair, and entertaining. My personal two cents regarding GameStop managers is very positive, based on my limited experience with multiple stores in Texas several months ago (February, 2019). Three store managers went well above and beyond to coordinate and help me acquire a scarce discontinued item still on a store shelf hundreds of miles from where I live. They all were 11 on a scale of 10 in customer service. Very sincere, patient, courteous, and impressive customer service. With three random managers involved, that reflects to me an excellent company-wide focus on their customer service for all customers. I hope that you enjoy similar success with them.

I've learned that if you are going to buy second hand technology it's better to buy them directly from the owner. You don't have to pay a third party seller, there are usually in a great cosmetic condition, they are far more honest on the condition if it's not in perfect condition, and they know and most likely will tell you about the history of the item so you can get a good idea of what you are buying. Third party sellers are just overpriced and terrible.
