Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters - four young women each determined to live life on her own terms -- is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

IF Watson were going to be cast, she obviously should have been Joe. Duh.

When the lead girl looks more like a boy than the lead boy looks like a boy …. too "progressive" for me, thanks. I'll stick to the timeless classics.

I think it's more about you being too narrow-minded and less about the movie being progressive.

To destroy yet another classic, again. NO thanks. Watch a Weinstein defender/enabler Streep, another radical Dern (who has done innumerable sex scenes btw) and Hollywood prostitutes (Emma Watson has been outted with her naked pics and secret Panama bank account) play beloved, sacred roles - NO. Everyone is completely miscast.

"Don't leave. You'll be bored of him in two years, and we will be interesting forever" it's the desperation in Jo's voice that makes this line hit so hard.

    “You’re ONE beauty!”
    Omg Amy you SAVAGE

    • HindsightPOV
      HindsightPOV Month ago

Saoirse has many beauties other than her hair. Just saying. Whenever that line was said in any version of Little Women I saw, it always had a ring of inaccuracy because the actress playing Jo was always anything but plain and ugly. That’s Hollywood for you.

    • Winter Bliss
      Winter Bliss Month ago +5

Except the book didn’t specify who said that line. And considering Meg fussed about Jo wearing gloves to a party, even though they were stained yellow...the line “Your one beauty” could very well have been said by Meg.
Amy could’ve said the first line, Meg the second (“Your one beauty”), Marmee the third (because in the very next page, she uses a similar line that borders on exactness but just worded differently), and then Beth.

My predictions for Best Director in 2020 Oscars:
    Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story)
    Greta Gerwig (Little Women)
    Robert Eggers (The Lighthouse)
    Todd Phillips (Joker)
    Bong Joon-Ho (Parasite)

    • ShadowCat
      ShadowCat 12 days ago

There's no way Eggers is getting in there. It's just not happening. Also can't rule out Scorsese, Tarantino, Almodovar, Mendes, or Waititi or Johnson (every once in a while a comedy director sneaks in, like Charles Crichton for A Fish Called Wanda, Billy Wilder for Some Like It Hot; it's rare, but it happens).
      These four seem pretty solid:
      Greta Gerwig: Little Women
      Bong Joon-Ho: Parasite
      Sam Mendes: 1917
      Martin Scorsese: The Irishman
It's the fifth that's up in the air. Could be either Tarantino, Almodovar, Waititi, Johnson, Philiips or Baumbach.
