Lathe restoration. Simple lathe stand.

  • Continuing to develop my skills, I decided to buy a small lathe for metal work.
I was lucky, this turning machine (TV-4 model) I found on internet and
the location was not far from my home.
This lathe was produced in Soviet union in 1974 and it still works.
    I'll do some restoration work.
    Thanks for watching.

Good job fixing up the late.
    Ignore negative comments :)
My only thought seeing this is about the bottom stand, while a great idea to have a drawer to stor stuff, is that stand not too deep? I would imagine you having to stand just a tad too far away from the lathe for comfortable use, especially if you stand for more than say 20 minutes working manually.

The repair of the tail-stock control wheel was most ingenious! Full Marks!😎
I can now see how you have such a well equipped workshop.
I have recently decided to equip myself with a metalwork lathe, because frequently I have small requirements where it would be very useful. Unfortunately, the first one I found that was suitable, had been sold the day before!! So, I'm still looking.
I'll be interested to see what use you put yours to.
    _From Google._

15:40. That should be machine oil. NOT Motor OIL. Invest in proper machine oil. Multigrade Engine oil is much too thick, and will damage the bearing, and bearings in time. The correct grade will be specified in the manual. Other wise good job. Please change to the proper oil as soon as you can. It would be a crime to ruin a very good job, and a good Lathe by using the wrong oil. Most Hobby Lathes today have plastic gears. Yours has metal gears. Get the correct oil.

Wait at 5:56 gasket nice and all but is that grease? Don't you think that cavity is to large for grease, where do you think it will end up when the gears start turning?

Looks like normal human restoration that you and I can do. Within budget and time frame. Fixing worn parts, fixing broken parts. Not the crazy down to the last screw restoration one apparently nowadays needs to do to not attract butthurt perfectionists.
That said, I cannot agree on your pick of the color scheme, gray is just.. too gray, you know. Some nice colorful hammer paint finish would have been just perfect. Your skill with the roller is second to none, though, I can never get this to work, brush for me all the way :)
Also would have probably replaced the slotted screws with nice socket screws, but that's just me kinda like that hexagon look.
Aside from that, the handle fix. Very very well done, who needs 2k mold silicone when you can use regular caulking one ;) And where that pens which paint you blew into the epoxy? Genius! Gonna remember that for whenever I need to do something similar.

gubr78. all the down to the last screw "restorations" I have seen on you tube. have been just an ego trip for the Clown who shows his dubious "skills". most have no engineering skills whatsoever.
I had one criticism of this job. he used engine oil instead of proper machine oil.

Most comments seemed to slam this guy pretty hard but had you read the description, he is working on his skills. This lathe is not an antique. All it needed was some cleaning up, maybe some new wiring and a little new paint. He said was working on the stand, not so much the lathe. There was no need to take it all the way down and get extensive with it for what he was intending to do with it. So, lighten up. It's a working machine. It didn't have to be fully restored to 'like new' condition.

    • TheJR1948
      TheJR1948 8 months ago +3

Thomas Whitten. I am a retired Mechanical Engineer. My only criticism of this job, is. He used Multigrade Engine oil. Engine oil is too thick. it will put undue load on the gearing, and make the motor work much harder. Otherwise I was impressed.
I have watched a lot of "restorations" on youtube. Most of them are awful. and, do more harm than good.

I would be concerned about out of tolerance gears, bearings, sliding surfaces and of course the electric motor. Having said that I can't wait to run across one of these and get knee deep in gears and grease and nuts and bolts. I'll overcome my concerns about wear and tear as I work through the project. I would have used a paint brush instead of roller. Nice move on the wheel repair. Got some pointers. Thanks and nice job.

Apart from the handwheel casting and the wooden stand fabricatión, this Is a how not to fix a lathe Lesson. Also you should not use motor oil on the gear head and on the Norton, if you don't have acces to te proper one, use hidraulic oil. You are a woodworker not a metalworker. Keep trying.
