Watch a fly-through animation of Notre-Dame rebuilt with a reconstructed spire and glass roof

  • Published on May 17, 2019
  • Miysis Studio has created an animation showing its vision of a rebuilt Notre-Dame that combines a reconstruction of Viollet-le-Duc spire with a modern glass roof. The Belgium visualisation studio created the movie to show how the cathedral, which was devastated by fire last month, could be rebuilt using modern and traditional materials.

How about restoring the visual appearance of the cathedral to how it was before the fire.....but using modern more fire resistant materials and modern building safety standards? Modernists get the updates they want only with modern building materials while traditionalists get back the cathedral as how it looked before. But the real winner would be the cathedral itself in that it would get fire resistant materials and work that meets modern building codes making it less likely for a major fire like what happened to occur again.

This is a great way to preserve what remains of the cathedral, and actually improve it dramatically by letting in so much natural light from above. Imagine fragrant roses growing there atop Notre Dame...

The only positive side of this half-wit proposal is that they held back from proposing turning it into a trendy a shopping mall with Starbucks under the spire!

Building it back to it's original shape is architectural falacy because we do not longer live in the time when the original roof was made. Notre Dame is not original from one epoque but a palimpsest of many. Just like Le Duc's XIX century spire was, in it's time, a modern re imagination of how ideal gothic should be. (Neo gothic)
So, why not honor the memory of the fire with XXI century adition?

    • Noe Berengena

Better yet, why not execute a XXII century addition?

The original shape before the fire, which makes the building beautiful and not a disgusting postmodernist grotesque aberration. "We" don't need to honor the memory of a catastrophe by doing another. And are you even French? because this whole "we" is very funny, you have no power to say what the French have to do with their cultural legacy

I like it. It’s a really pretty idea. The only thing that pisses me off, is that they would build the roof with wood. That’s a good chunk of the reason why the fire spread so easily, was because of the wood roof.

drabtoka 76 way not in Paris. I think you know nothing about Paris. You have many modern structures, buildings and skycrapers in Paris. Paris cannot be restricted to the historic center, where all tourists come but a very tiny part of Paris.

A monumental, 7-century cathedral turned to a church with a greenhouse/recreation park on the top. I'm absolutely astonished how progressive we are! They could as well open a kiosk selling hamburgers and a pub!

How soon could we get a mini food court, where urban hep cats can stare into their iPads and iPhones as they munch on almond croissants and drink espressos? The main thing the glass roof scheme does is create an observation deck to look over the city of Paris in all directions. Is that a good thing? Yes? No?

  • marvelfannumber1
    marvelfannumber1 6 months ago +5

I like how the glass is made to have the same color as the original roof, and has the same silhouette/shape. I also like that le Duc's spire is faithfully reconstructed. The greenery inside however is pretty generic, something more interesting could be done there.
Overall, I'd still vastly prefer rebuilding it as it was with modern reinforcement/fireproofing, but if it *has* to be something modern, this would be fine. It is a fine compromise. Probably the only good suggestion I've seen so far for a a new design.

while it does a nice nod to original buildings architecture for a modern design, I am still not sold on the idea because it is modernist architecture, most people want Notre Dame rebuilt how it was to restore the history that was lost.

the glass is kind of cool but the 'rooftop' garden concept reminds me of nearly every proposed redevelopment/modern apartment building iv'e seen in the last decade. it's a very nice but generic concept. In 200 hundred years they might wish we had just restored it to how it was, because anything we do to 'update' it by current modern standards with fall out of fashion in the coming decades anyway.

Chinggis Han i get that but what’s so wrong with controversy? if not every, almost every noteable piece of architecture was controversial at its time that’s how it grows and develops. buildings survive by adapting with the times. people thought gaudi was crazy as fuck but now look at how his pieces stand. i get the point you’re trying to make but i think it only further supports the unique-ness and talents of the architect.

The best way to avoid any kind of controversy
      From any people
Is to simply rebuild it to the way it was.
So many bullets from the public could be dodged.
So much controversy could be avoided.

Chinggis Han i don’t think it was going for a park but even just a more sustainable design for a building as large as it is. i think being a public building that brings a lot of attraction to it anyways it’ll be nice to have a space for tourists that can be separate from the church’s masses

    • AnniIsIn
