Make an AWESOME Terrarium for FREE!

  • Terrariums are great fun and I honestly think the world would be a better place if everyone would make one! I could list a number of reasons why I think this, but that's not the point of the video.
I get a ton of comments and excuses from people as to why they can't make a terrarium. Some say that they don't want to kill any plants and others say that they don't have any money. My response generally is something like, “They don't cost much to make and are easy to maintain. You should create one.” That said, I don't believe in making excuses for anything and in this video, I wanted to take down the myth that terrariums are expensive to construct. In fact, you could make one for $0 if you are still on the fence.
It should go without saying that there are a number of ways to make an effective terrarium. The methods that I show in this video are simply adaptations of what I find to be extremely effective. So if you have not yet jumped into the world of terrariums, now is your time! Seriously, go outside and get it done already... you'll thank me later.
On a side note, if you're not good with plants or live in a temperate area, I recommend starting out with moss, liverwort and selaginella (spike moss), if you can find it. Mosses are in most cases bullet proof and work extremely well in terrariums. Also a lot of temperate plants just won't work in a terrarium. You may think you're doing something wrong, when in actuality it's the plants. Also, I'm not saying that you're guaranteed to have success the first time. If for whatever your first terrarium fails, don't be discouraged! It happens to a lot of people. The whole process is a beautiful learning experience, if you choose to embrace it.

I just took notes on this whole video to make a terrarium of my own. It is winter right now so I have to wait a little bit for at least the snow to melt to attempt this. I really love these little terrariums you make and I am going to cover my house with them! I am also going to attempt to make my fish tank and ball python enclosure bio active. I love nature and your channel can easily help guide me in the right direction. I watched other videos but they aren't so easy to understand. I like that you actually explain the point of each "layer" and what things do to keep everything living and happy!!!! Keep doing what you doing it's an amazing quality

Hey, you desert folks... there are 100 species of MOSS that live in the Mojave Desert. Even more in the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts. And little ferns too. You just have to look a bit more closely in unexpected places and at different elevations!! No excuses! :))

  • Lackadaisical Child

I love this video. I also would love if you did a video for found plants like this but with a 10 gallon tank instead of a jar.

I have a fear of bugs and am wondering if when you make a terrarium they ever take over? I’m afraid of ending up with a jar of bugs

  • Trollgummas Zauberwelt

It seems to me that you haven't got only one "green thumb" as we say in Germany, you have got ten of them - so amazing!
I've never seen such terrariums before and logically I do not have any experience with these wonderful things.
But I am so excited, want to go outside and collect everything I need to build this terrarium.
    May I ask questions?
What happens next? Does the moss live "forever"? Do I have to cut it sometimes? Do I have to water it?

Your video is awesome! There is a scattering of snow on the ground right now here in Southern Michigan but after watching this, I couldn't wait until spring. Going for a walk today, I was amazed at how much life there is under the surface - even in winter - and my first terrarium turned out wonderfully. For a year or so I've been saving the carbon granules from old fish filters for this very purpose but was nervous to give it a try. Thanks for the confidence!

Maybe this is a stupid question but: My apartment is relatively dark since I live on ground level and need to keep my shutters closed so people don't keep peeping in. Is that a problem for the moss or is it okay with few natural light?

I tried to make a terrarium a few years ago and it died so quickly. I think it was because I over watered it, and also the soil around here isn't great (its mostly clay)

Hey Tanner I just finished my first terrarium based off of this video! It worked out really well but the inside seems to constantly have condensation on it and it is really foggy. Is there any way to fix that or is it just something that normally happens?? I thought about making a little hump with hot glue on the middle of the lid to make the water drip from it; would this work/ is it safe for the plants?

    • Musa Hussain
Musa Hussain 27 days ago +1

If your terrarium constantly has condensation on the lid, it means you've over watered it, wipe the water off with a paper towel or cotton wool until condensation only appears at dusk and dawn.

This is a great way to use our glass containers we'd just throw out. Great for practicing and gift giving. I'm also a fan of ispods and been wanting to have some for pets and now I can do it.
