Cats it’s an awful movie (this is pretty obvious) but i have to admit that there are 2 musical performances that i genuinely liked, such as Taylor Swift’s Bombalurina singing Macavity and Jennifer Hudson’s rendition of Memory (i actually cried watching the scene)

If they were going to Cats into a musical they could have used CGI cats and just have their voices sing. Instead they screwed this musical up. BIG TIME! I loved Cats on Broadway.

    10. The CGI was phenomenal (the mice and cockroaches was not good, yeah, but the cats AMAZING).
    9. It is the source material, take it or leave it.
    8. Jellicle song for Jellicle cats, c’mon it’s fricken catchy.
    7. Live singing is the highlight of acting a musical.
    6. If you’re attracted to it, it’s your problem.
    5. Victoria learns to love the now abandoned life.
    4. All actors remain phenomenal, the CGI didn’t take away from that.
    3. If you’re gonna have Rebel Wilson and James Corden in a movie, you’d better expect some cringey, cheesy, lovable jokes.
    2. Same as 9, it’s the source material.
    1. Same as 10, the CGI was phenomenal. When animals were made to look as real as possible people complained about The Lion King. This is the perfect blend between CGI and real life.
And if you haven’t noticed, I enjoyed this movie very much.

They took a classic stage musical and dumped a cat box on it They ruined it by trying to improve and re-imagine it as a comedy movie. The original was a stage production that focused on song and dance performances. The story was based on excerpts of the original T.S. Elliot poems, and only served as basic framework narrative to keep the show moving. Each song and character is presented as it's own vignette act . The original was staged like many musicals, in the style of a ballet or opera, and doesn't try to be anything else. This movie is an example of trying too hard, or throwing out a lot of ideas without clear goals. They embellished on it- adding the extra Rum Tum Tugger/ Mr. Mephistopheles story arc, gratuitous slapstick, ad-libs, and the overly used cgi. The end result is very confusing. None of these things were in Cats. This is not Cats. This is a mess of spastic cringy uncanny valley creepiness. It's best to not remake classics unless you are going to remain faithful to the source and be brilliant in doing so.

Cats is mostly known for being a visually striking musical. It's not known for its story but rather for the songs, the costumes, the makeup, and the choreography. Simply turning it into a movie shouldn't have been considered a good idea in the first place because you can't cram all those character introductions and expect them to flow smoothly along with the plot when most of those characters just come and go in the actual musical.

it cute and touching. And Francesca looks really hot. Only the
proportions of some scenes do not match, eg the scene where the cats
walk on the railroad track. There the cats are as small as rats while
inside the rail car they are as big as dogs. Also in the jumps scenes
you can easily tell that the actors were supported by hidden wires.
Other than that, I really liked the film and will surely watch it again

You do not know what you are talking about. Gellical....the cats are angels they are ghosts and Grizabella sang the song about memories of her life ...wishing she could have another chance... Victoria saw the goodness in Grizabellas heart, as Grizabellachad gone off the rails during life due to influence of Macavity . Victoria persuaded Grazabella to Sing for old Deuteronomus so she could win the Gellical prize of a new life...that is why shy floats off Inn the balloon as a metaphore.. for leaving the ghost Gellical cats.... for he new mortal life.
You should NOT do critiques without knowing what you are talking about. You made yourself look foolish.."What does Gellical even mean?"
Re fat hate.....Jennyanydots has been portrayed larger in some productions of the play.....I actually doubt that you have even seen the stage play!
I watched this movie with my son....we loved it. My son having danced for around 15 years could actually appreciate the talent of the performers.
Its amazing that the singing was real and not lip syncing. I disagree with all you negative, disparaging , judgemental remarks. I would like to see your talents... well I suppose you do have a really big mouth..

What I hated about the movie, was the omission of two main song scenes the first being, the awful battle of the pekes and the pollicles, as presented by Munkstraap, which is his turn to show his talent as a director and potential leadership qualities, Munkstraap, being undone in front of Deutoronimy by his cats not quite getting his vision, specially by Rum Tum Tugger, who plays the bag pipes expecting an applause, and so on!

The second omitted song and also atrocity of the treatment of Gus the theatre cat, is Growl Tiger's Last Stand, within which is another song, Billy McCaw. Gus sings he could do it again, stage transforms with Gus acting as Growl Tiger, who, within that song, sings Billy McCaw to Lady Griddlebone, making it a clever 3 layered concept like inception!

A song (Gus the theatre cat), within a song (Growltiger's last stand), singing billy McCaw (3rd layer) - This is all lost in the movie! the atrocity of Ray Winstone being Growl Tiger as a Henchman to McCavity and only the first line of Growltier's last stand by Ray Winstone, after which he is ridiculed by Bustopher Jone's was a missed opportunity to the depth of Gus's character and the clever 3 layerd song levels in the original theatre production.

Jellicle means "Dear Little" as explained in the book Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats - TS Elliott, his young Niece, couldn't pronounce "dear little" properly, coming out with "Jellicle", which Elliot used, along with Pollicle dogs - Pollicle meaning "poor little" - it is well documented, so the narrator here, saying, "jellicle, whatever that means!" Didn't research properly.

Also, there IS a Plot! I got it, it is what it is, Jellicle cats meeting once a year, where they show their talent, for every Jellicle cat has a unique talent that sets them apart from each other, so, a railway cat, gumbie cat, magical cat and so on. Victoria's talent originally is a ballerina dancing cat, she never has any lines in the original. The most deserving cat is then chosen to go to the Heavy Side Layer - Cat Heaven, where the cat is reborn into a new life - NOT Dying as a lot misinterpret, but reincarnated into a happier life.

Grizabella in her fall from grace and outcast existence becomes the most deserving, full of bitterness and regret who just wants to be accepted in society again. In the original, it is Victoria who is the first to touch Grizabella out of kindness.

THAT IS THE PLOT! What more is needed?

I think that the main reason why the Cats movie is so hated that it's just not as good as people expected it to be. I mean, that's why I don't like it.
Okay, yeah, CGI is terrible, but I could swallow it. After all, the point of the Cats is not that actors look like cats. In the original show, they didn't even try so hard, but it was so much better. You know why? Because they had the damn feeling!
Some people think that Rum Tum Tugger was 'inappropriate' in the film. You know what I think? That he was castrated! No joke. The point of the whole character was that he enjoys the attention, and he is shamelessly sexy! In the movie, his point is that he is... Umm, what is his point again?
Same with Grizabella. Please, please, please, listen to Memory in the original show. The whole anger, sadness, regretting... It honestly makes you want to cry. Here, it makes you want to leave the movie theater and say "That must be some kind of joke. Call me when you'll have the real Grizabella."
Of course, the duet of Demeter and Bombalurina is painfully missing in both, Grizabella's and Macavity's song, but I know there's no way to bring them, so... Just mentioning.
Won't even mention Gus. That was the moment when the whole thing fell apart. He looked so... Tired of his freaking life. Gus in the show had much less energy than him, but he looked like he really wanted to live again. Gus in that movie was like 'I can't wait to die, let's just get over this'.
And, yes, there is no story, actually. And there is no protagonist. I don't understand why did they put Victoria on that place. All of the cats are protagonists. Each of them tell their story. Every story is something special. And if the actors really feel their characters, you don't need a long explanation of their personality. You get them. You feel them.
Well, that certainly didn't work in 2019.
By the way, if Beautiful Ghosts replaced Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles, I want to speak to the director. This is unacceptable.

When I was 13, my parents started breeding cats. Birmans. Seal point Birmans, to be precise. I would wake up and be surrounded by cats and all that cat life entailed. Kitten cats, male cats, female cats. cat cages, cat shows, cat breeding. Always the breeding, the eternal lifecycle of the cat burned into my retinas. The Yowling, the prowling, the fucking. When I was 15, I hung out with some furries in Hamilton. Charming folk, I really liked them. Loved Disney films, adored My Little Pony. They got turned on by putting on dog suits, fox suits, catsuits. Adults - All yowling, prowling, fucking.I'm 19 now, I've just seen the Cats the Movie. I've never seen the stage show, but I know the songs. I get the gist. Big songs, bug numbers. This film is something else. I am 13 again, I'm 15 again. I'm at my parent's house, hearing cats fuck. I'm watching a furry put on a catsuit. I'm watching Idris Elba, nude, as a cat. His ass is sticking out. I am watching all the cats, legs constantly spread, gyrating, grinding, growling. Yowling, prowling, fucking. This is the worst thing I've ever seen. This is what death feels like. This is the worst Ketamine trip. This is awful. This is not a film, this is chaos. This is the CGI from Scorpion King. I don't know if I'm five minutes in or five hours. Nothing matters anymore. This is the death of all things. Fuck it.

I love WatchMojo and their content and I watch it all the time. But this list is a whole load of BS, in my opinion. If you haven't seen the original stage musical, then you are going to find it creepy and not understand it. In the musical, the actors wear very slinky and tight costumes and have very heavy theatre makeup to make them look like cats but not to lose their human aspects so yes the CGI might look a bit creepy but it gives the same effect as the musical. The whole point of the plot is to present the candidates for the jellicle choice so that is why there are multiple songs introducing characters. Also, this movie has updated the story for modern audiences through Andy Blankenbuehler's choreography with the inclusion of street dancers and tap dancing whereas the entire musical is danced in the styles of ballet and contemporary. Francesca Hayward is brilliant as Victoria - her character in the musical has a lot of dancing to do so it was ideal to pick a Principal of the Royal Ballet to play this character. Judi Dench was meant to play Grizabella in the original musical in 1981 but snapped her Achilles tendon before the opening night so it was lovely to see her reunited with Cats. Rant over.

Too many character introductions? That’s all the stage musical it’s based upon is. The movie has as much of a story and character development as the stage musical. Also, the costumes/makeup are true to the stage production. They don’t have cat noses and paws so why should cgi have added those? Cats is a choreography heavy production and hands and feet are essential to dance. It would’ve taken quite a bit away from the choreo to have CGI “paws”. Now, I can’t say they should’ve made this as a movie, but those of us that fell in love with Cats on Broadway were able to enjoy the music and choreography again, and the storyline/plot/character development were never a huge focus as it’s based upon poetry.
