S8E1 "Winterfell" Breakdown - Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 1 (The Final Season)

  • Published on Apr 16, 2019
  • Welcome back for my Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 1 Breakdown video. Well, we finally saw the first official episode of the final season of Game of Thrones. This was mostly a set up episode, but it was definitely packed full of information, hidden clues, and foreshadowing. Jon Snow reunited with Arya Stark and Bran Stark. Jon Snow finally rode a dragon. Arya Stark and Gendry reunited. Bran Stark and Jaime Lannister reunited. Theon Greyjoy rescued his sister, Yara Greyjoy. Jon Snow learned the truth about his parents, along with many other things. There is so much to talk about, but this is only the first of many videos I will make about Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 1.

Just wondering if anyone knows why sams new best buddy creepy tree boy bran hadn't told him that his father and brother were dead
.. how he found out that news and how Jon found out about his parents makes me feel like bran wanted both of them to find out the news in the worst possible way.. He could have warned Sam and told him the circumstances around it like how his father had betrayed and turned on his liege lady and killed her men sacked her house and helped kill her the was intending doing the same to dany and antime who supported her (which would habe meant Jon was in the firing line) do you think he's be that upset with Jon if his dad had tried to murder Jon and Jon had killed him because of it 🤔😥

It's odd that this isn't a show after the show. No diss to John Oliver but they could push his back for one of these wrap up shows like Chris Hardwick used to do.

Having looked this over I am realizing this is G R Martin's abstract version of King Arthur (who died and was reborn in the legend). Daenerys is Morgana. Jon will have to claim the throne but he will head off to the wall like King Arthur did when he retreated to Avalon. Like Jon King Arthur was raised by a foster father and did not realize he was the son of a King, Uther Pendragon. Uther sort of kidnapped/seduced Arthur's mother, Igraine,so Arthur was sent off to a foster family. He was later revealed to be the true heir and he assumed the throne. Jon Snow will assume the throne but he will not stay on the throne but he will do it to stop Daenerys (who though is not bad is internally conflicted like Morgana). (By the way, Morgana was the 1/2 sister of Arthur and they had relations as well because they did not know they were related- she was also magical). Bran means "raven" in Welsch. He is related to Arthur based upon Welsh versions of the story. He is also Arthur's Merlin. Ayra is a knight (similar to Gawain0 she may die as he did). Tyrion is the bard and will likely not die. According to the legend, the God of Death (in Welsch lore) had the cauldron which was able to raise the dead. Arthur and Bran were able to stop the God of Death (sound familiar). There are also references to Welsch lore (especially ravens who communicated between this world and the spiritual realm). There was also worship in Welsch traditions of trees etc. My conclusion Game of Thrones is an Arthurian retelling. So the end will be Jon Snow becoming the King and there will be an insinuation at the end that even though he leaves his kingship he will return as he cannot die.

Post episode 2, they royally screwed up s8 so far imo. I was so nervouse they couldnt give us the quality they have previously with just 6 episodes. My biggest complaint, is how glossed over Bran's character is. Every time he is mentioned, its just, Bran does his thing, i know hes right. Well how? Bran should have to do things that show his words have merit. Daenerys hearing from John, that Bran and Sam say he is targaryen, is the worst example. She just says, oh, okay, and cut scene. I'm so saddened by the end product.

When Drogon was creeping on Danny and Jon... I see dragon eggs in the near future ;-) That extra green color on Rhaegal (and extra red on Drogon) could mean that it's the right time in their reproductive cycles for dragon husbandry. Eating less and nesting... that might not be because they are in the north. A lot of times when goats are getting ready to kid they stop eating, and some birds are known to put way more effort into building a nest than into even feeding themselves. We have a small farm channel that features our goats ducks and chickens from DamnifIknow Farms :-) But yeah, I see more dragons coming around, especially now that they've seen the live Targaryen sex show.

I think when his family finds out Jon’s parentage especially with Bran explaining & backing the story that Arya & Sansa will be glad. They will like Jon to have the better claim knowing how good he is.
Northern Families could go either way. Jon is still a Stark. & Rhaegar was only the bad guy when they didn’t know Lyanna left eloped with him.
I think northerners will back Jon’s claim. They already named him a king. This addresses their concerns with his bendy knee & dislike of Daeny.
It’s Daeny & Co who will have a problem.
But she will look hypocritical... all her talk of her rightful claim.
Sam has a point. Does Daenerys have it in her as a ruler to set aside her crown for her people?
    I don’t think so.
I think she’s becoming more paranoid.....
Hopefully her counselors will guide her on a right path.
They could Co rule like Davos said...
& then their Daughter will become heir

  • Jessica Angelini
    Jessica Angelini 4 months ago

I don’t think Jon said Sam’s last name cuz Daeny seems shocked his name is Tarley. So I don’t think Daeny told Jon cuz she did not know the connection. But I think it’s an issue she didn’t tell Jon in general that she had to execute 2 Westerosi lords.
And I’m not sure Jorah did know about the Tarleys execution. He returned to her service right as she returned from that battle.
I don’t even know if Sam told Jorah his last name. So Jorah likely told Daeny that Sam was the man who saved his life & that he was at Winterfell which made sense as he was studying to be Maester of the night’s watch & the Wall was falling so Winterfell was where everyone north was going.
I agreed with the execution of Randall. But she should’ve heeded Tyrion & took Dickon hostage.

John Snow (Aegon Targaryen) has Dragon blood from his father, and natural riding ability from his mother, Liana Stark who was a very accomplished horse rider. This probably is why Jon Snow(Aegon) took to riding his dragon so well, so fast. Even Dany was stunned at his ability to ride the dragon. He is a natural. The "True King of the Seven Kingdoms" 6th of his name.

Dany started out with 3 dragons. Now she has one. Because now that Jon has ridden Rhaegal, Rhaegal is his dragon, not Dany's. That's the way it works with dragons. They are bonded to their riders and no one else.

There’s something that’s been bothering me: Qygon giving the crossbow to Braun and telling him to kill Jamie and Tyrian.
When I first saw that, it was like a needle going across an LP record. What?
I’d like you to review that for a second. If Cercie wanted Tyrian dead, she could have gotten the Mountain to do it right there.
Jamie, is understandable, sorta. But both?
Who saved Qygon? Starks. And the Mountain? Qygon. Cercie THINKS he is her little wind up toy, but something tells me that little mister Frankenstein answers ONLY to Qygon. The Mountain is programmed that way.
Who eventually kills Cercie? Qygon. He is so plotting against the Lannisters. HE gave Braun the crossbow and put the hit out on the two brothers. Not Cercie.
Something is going on right before our eyes and I think we’ve missed it. Qygon is hand of the Queen. Nobody is going to Cercie and asking if she put a hit out on her two brothers.
    Bears some study, I think.

@talkingthrones I have a legitimate question? How did Arya know that Jon took a had been stabbed in the heart?? I think that ALL of the Starks have some sort of site like Bran, or at least the men. Notice the look between Jon and Bran when they reunite, there’s something there that’s unspoken, and I don’t believe it’s just Jon thinking that Bran’s a weirdo. I believe that because Arya lost her sight when she was a faceless girl, she can tap into this as well.

Did you notice in this new intro, the astrolabe is going backward?
Before, it shows the Doom of Valyria, the Ascension of Robert Baratheon to the throne and following the timeline.
In this new intro, it goes backward. First, the wall being taken down by the dragon, then the Red Wedding(?!?) and in the last the dragons borning.
What is your opinion? You think this could be actually confirming the theory about Bran being capable to actually travel and change the events in the past?
Like whispering in the Mad King, then building the wall and then even further to the point where he goes to the moment which the Night King was created?
Perhaps that gives even more meaning to the phrase of the three-eyed raven, " the past is already written the ink is dry"
Also, why do you think the Red Wedding was the illustration chosen? Foreshadowing something or just random?
Thank you for your amazing videos :)

The line about the sword is double meaning. His sword is his kingdom and power or rule. A representative of that so when Arya says "heavy" it means his burden is and what the sword carries with all his battles.

Check this out. So I'm watching S1 for like the 6th time and I noticed something in the title sequence. Yes folks. Thrones is SO good I watch the opening title sequence with each rewatch lolbvs. Remember the message from the Night King at the Last Hearth? When the symbol was lit people said it resembled the sigil for House Targaryen.... ok.... watch the title sequence when they show the Last Hearth.... it's sitting on that same symbol. We've been looking at the symbol as 2 dimensional. But when you raise it up it's a spiral. If it lowers into the grounds it spirals...... LIKE THE CRYPTS OF WINTERFELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is my FIRST theory that that symbol represents either Winterfell or the Starks for SURE. And now that the backwardly filled crypts are at the top and the Night King just impaled a child to the center of it we know what he's after... a child....a boy....and what does Danaerys have to do with this theory? She's the mother of ASOIAF? Its gonna be twisted whatever it is. Aw man. SO twisted.

An educated and objective view of Daenerys execution of the Tarleys. Randyll did try to talk Rickon out of it,and Dany did give both a choice. She did what had to be done given that they betrayed her allies,House Tyrell.
Other players wouldn't have even given them the choice. Daenerys almost always offers her foes a chance to join her.
Also, don't forget,it appears she spared the rest of the Tarley men. That could come into play later.

Theons ships do look exactly like the rest he’s infiltrated .So it’s not hard to believe that they would get on board a ship of toungeless mutes that can’t call out for help to another ship. Anyways so it’s technically the easiest of all the iron fleet to sneek on .Seriously Euron shoulda thought about that!

okay, i returned a few days later, after watching the show again. and, still, vast disappointment. george r.r. martin's work and writing, obviously, is a masterpiece, a work of art and destined to be classic for the ages. the show itself, for the most part, will support his writing. BUT, season 8, episode 1, will go down as a failure produced by, what, inside politics behind the scenes? what happened? don't insult martin's caliber and powerful writing, by helping out a buddy who can't write? through...politics? obligation? the overall production's only as strong as its weakest link, and you guys should have given your buddy and pal a break some other way. it shows!!! i'm presuming part of the very real problem could be the editing, and lack of time. i am reading the comments, and for the most part, fans are making sympathetic excuses while trying to rationalize what's going on. sad, dudes. sad. the lack of connection between allll the characters!!! wtf? they all may as well have been playing bran!

at least consider this: one, the incredible background stories and experiences each character played--and us, the viewers with them all along--and two: the powerful childhood bondings that occurred before they even left winterfell.....upon reunion, wouldn't they at least share something about their stories with each other??? wouldn't at least one character have at least asked, "what happened to you, bro? what happened while you were gone on your adventures?"
this is the point: a good writer can, can, cover vast expanses of time, geography, emotions and experiences in a few lines.
i didn't need the trite comedic one-liners. as a viewer, at least i remember...winter is coming. the wight walkers are on the way.
