Making a Bottle Terrarium + Closed Terrarium Basics

  • Published on Feb 21, 2017
  • I have been wanting to make a terrarium in this bottle for months. I figured in this demonstration I would take the time to answer a lot of very common questions while simultaneously building this terrarium.
As I explained in the video the goal of this terrarium is for it to literally be packed with plants. When it's grown in I want it to look like a ball of plants.
Anyways I hope you enjoy this video and thanks for watching!
Additionally here are the links from the video, if you can't access the cards for whatever reason:

For the oak leaf creeping fig, do you just clip a piece and put it in? We don’t need to plant it with roots?

  • oandersontech
    oandersontech 25 days ago

It seems that you are, more or less, just placing the plants _onto_ the substrate rather than planting them _into_ the substrate. Am I seeing this correctly? Will the sustainable moisture sort of ensure that the plants that are placed where you like them will send out roots and “plant” themselves?

Do you need to water the plant? Some is bothering on my mind.. the plant absorb the water inside then can the life cycle maintain if the water you poured from the beginning gets dried?

if you were to put this terrarium on the surface of Mars, assuming it never got buried by blowing Martian dust, would it survive?

    • The Galvinizer
      The Galvinizer 4 months ago

@Ron Morris a brewing bottle could probably handle the pressure but I don't know that it could maintain a high enough temperature to support life. The average surface temp on Mars is -63°C and mars gets a lot less sunlight than we do

    • Ron Morris
      Ron Morris 4 months ago

@The Galvinizer if you used a brewing bottle though, it shouldn't ever pop. And as long as the bottle could get sunlight on it, the greenhouse affect should keep things warm inside.

    • The Galvinizer
      The Galvinizer 4 months ago

It would be too cold, most likely. Also mars has a very low atmospheric pressure so the bottle might explode if it's sealed completely (and if it's not, the atmosphere will leak out until it's too thin to support life)

Hi Serpa, I'm writing from Italy and I really appreciate your work. I've made my first terrarium using a large bottle. I've planted red and white fittonia and some coffee plants, but I over watered and now there is some mold. I cannot put out the plants, because they are bigger than the bottle hole. How can I remove the mold? I've to use some chemical?

@8:31 dont you mean when plants have no light they convert oxygen to carbon dioxide?

  • Saint Noir
Saint Noir 4 months ago +1

i got a little bit confused with the carbon to oxygen stuff deal. can someone explain it to me please?

    • MadGirl BitchingBoutStuffs
      MadGirl BitchingBoutStuffs 4 months ago

Photosyntheses is plants using the energy of sunlight to convert carbondioxide into oxygen. But ones the sun is gone they need another energy source. So they convert oxygen back into carbondioxide. That process is called cellular breathing and all animals are doing it to power movement-> breathing.

If you have a big opening and need ventilation for an animal, use tights. Wrap it over the top and wind the excess nylon around itself.
