For Mac Users Only: How to Unzip a File (Fixing Mac Error 1 - Operation Not Permitted)

  • Published on May 9, 2012
  • We love our Macs. But occasionally a funky bug pops up. Fortunately, there's usually a helpful explanation online that shows you a good work-around.
This video demos how to get past the "Error 1 - Operation Not Permitted" error that occurs when trying to unzip a zip file created at
The solution is to use Terminal, a built-in program on the Mac. Type "unzip" and drag/drop the zip file into the Terminal window. Press Enter.
Your unzipped files will go to your user account folder which you can easily access using Finder.

No... maybe you love your macs. I don't, they are an expensive, useless shit compared to any other operative system. Mac stinks.

    • V
      V 6 months ago

Actually windows is one of the more useless OSes compared to OSX and Linux(OSX and Linux are UNIX based). You probably don't do anything IT related hence the reason you think windows is the best OS. You can triple boot a mac having Linux, Windows and OSX all running on 1 laptop for testing without any VM issues

This is all very confusing for people with no programming experience!!!
I would strongly suggest everybody who doesn't know what they are doing: 1) find the folder that contains the zip (it could easily be your desktop or a folder inside a folder..)
    When you done first step:
    2) (cmd+spacebar) will fire up the spotlight meta data search engine thingy. Just (write terminal and press enter)
and the suggested??? He calls it a software!? but it's a virtual terminal, aka a cli (command line interface) Here you can do everything but way more effective then in your GUI (graphical uniform interface) this is where you controll your mouse!
    3) IMPORTANT STEP which he doesn't include and it confuses eveyone in the long run! in terminal write: cd
followed by a space, and drag the folder from step 1 into the terminal and it writes a path after your space, then press enter.
you have now changed the directory you are working in, in your terminal, so there is no need for the last step that he suggest....
I wish i could explain it more easily, but u don't wanna mess with the user's root folder.. It's just in general a bad idea...
step 4) you don't need to drag the folder to unzip, you are already in it, just write the unzip command with a space followed by the name of the and youre done.

I wanted to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I bought a language book that came with a CD of 150 crucial mp3 files that were in a .zip archive that wouldn't unzip (using my MacBook Pro that's a few years old and OSX Snow Leopard) no matter how many times I tried. I got this exact error message. Fortunately Googling the error message led me to this video, and your shortcut worked like a charm; in less than five minutes all the mp3s were downloaded. Thanks again!
