Moi comments so I’m 15 wanting to start learning Finnish I want to learn now so I can make it a day to day thing in my life, and move to Finland when I’m 20, And so I’m wondering which should I start learning the Written or Spoken form, And everyone says that I should learn the Written for first since mostly all of Finland would understand me is that true, and also Will I NEED to learn the Spoken version to? Kiitos!

I can't hear the difference between ä and e. For example the word päivätär sounds the same for me as if it would be peiveter. Can you clearify this for me please? :)

So basically The Finnish "Ä" is pronounced like "a" in "Cat" ?
The Finnish "Ö" is pronounced like "e" but with rounded lips ?
same for the Finnish "Y", which is pronounced like "i" but again with rounded lips ?

  • Evil Ordos
Evil Ordos 4 months ago +3

Sound Ä is the most difficult sound in Finnish, at least for me. I really can't understand how I should hold my lips, tongue and how to exhale to pronounce Ä.
We have no sounds like Y, Ö or Ä in Russian. But I have no any problems with Y and Ö. Only this disgusting Ä and this difference between Ä and A. Especially difficult because our sound A is somewhere between Finnish Ä and A. Closer to A.

    • Evil Ordos
      Evil Ordos 2 months ago

    • Ais F
      Ais F 2 months ago

Evil Ordos привет! Я недавно начала учить финский. Мне кажется, наглядно разница показывается во фразе hyvää iltaa. Открытый ä и более закрытый, приближённый к русской О звук ”a” в слове ”iltaa”

Your videos are always amazing and really helpful,
But pronunciation of ö and y are quite difficult , can you make a video about It?
For example with the easy one hyvää yötä? Because the two letters combined are more difficult 😁
    Have a good day :)

I think you’d really benefit from watching the channel LangFocus ran by a man named Paul. He does a lot of language profiles (including Finnish!) and various other topics related to languages in general and he’s an actual teacher who uses all of those fancy names and terms you’d use to describe different aspects of languages. (If I recall correctly he lives in Japan and teaches English to Japanese students)
He even goes through the trouble of adding animations (they’re more than likely owned by someone else or are under public domain) to help clarify certain things. I wouldn’t know what an “alveolar tap” is if I didn’t watch his videos.
I’m not saying you’re lacking in anything, you’re doing amazing, BUT if you want to know any linguistic terms to use that better describes something like a “lazy pronunciation” he’d be a good channel to check out if you haven’t heard of him already.

Personally i like the fact that i don't have to learn the term 'alveolar tap' when someone like Kat can just explain it in terms that humans understand.

OH, SATAN, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! Pleeeeeease, do one with that bloody Ö, this letter is a fucking NIGHTMARE. I think I've already mentioned to you that it sometimes sounds like an A to me... It'll be impossible for you to record videos everytime someone has troubles with finnish pronounciation (which happens everytime... hehe), but some letters are just to 'exotic' for the outside world, just like the Ä, and Ö and the 'Lazy U' like a call the finnish 'Y'.... so... please?

    • Daniela !!!

@ms mr everytime I try to say the combination of Y and Ö it sounds like I'm about to throw up, like when I say yötä.

Taky jsem z česka, sice finsky moc neumím ale finské ä je trochu jiné než to německé. Nemyslím že je to velká chyba, ale nevím.
