Does anyone know if the 6 bay version of this also allows for plugging in different hard drives over time?

RAID 10 with hybrid SAS drives would be the enterprise way to do it.

So, it isn't a laptop with 100 TB of storage. Hey everyone, look at my HTC Evo 4G with 100TB of storage! This is a bit too much clickbait even for LMG.

@Linus Please build a NAS with DUAL mSATA 2.5 inch adapter cases inside of a QNAP QDA-A2AR. It does not make sense, but could be fun as it is a RAID, inside a RAID, inside a RAID :D

  • Sebastian Reichmann
Sebastian Reichmann 27 days ago that video was sort of pointless. Also...if there's a somebody in your company who's not out of probation yet or has been fired since shooting the video, maybe consider re-shooting or editing him out. Because pixelated faces and scrambled voices are weird....

last item, the newest SD Card specification was released a few months back. So, expect to see 127 TB SD cards hitting the market in about 2 years. Also, given their price point, they will still be cheaper than this setup and still have full bi-directional transfer speeds in excess of 1 GB/sec. Now, *THATS* portable!

  • Eric Oyen
    Eric Oyen Month ago

btw, you guys really need to do a show for those of us who live on a normal income and can't afford this expensive stuff. How about something in the sub $1,500 range?

  • Eric Oyen
    Eric Oyen Month ago

well, this certainly sounds like a boss device and would be perfect for some home installations, however, it's price is a lot more than most home video editing enthusiasts would be willing to pay. just the enclosure alone (no HDD's) is $2,499 not including taxes and shipping (free shipping on amazon, btw) and the SAS HDD's you would need for this are not cheap either. Prices range from a low of $250 to as high as $499 (depending on features). So, lets see how much this would cost if we used this particular enclosure and 12 of the Seagate Exos HDD ST12000NM0027 12TB (about $349 each not including shipping from newegg). Total cost (not including taxes or shipping) $6,687. For a low to mid range quality DAS for video editing in a professional setting, not too shabby. However, for the home video enthusiast, very pricey!

Whyw are you using this weak overpriced laptop? No surprise people are ashamed of using it and don't want their faces to be shown :D

  • mph8er
    mph8er Month ago

So, my OCD is triggered. RAID 5 doesn't use a dedicated parity drive (that's a RAID 3, which isn't really used much anymore). It stripes the parity across the drives in the array. It takes up the capacity of one drive, but it is evenly distributed across all the drives.

Just a friendly warning. We bought this exact same Areca enclosure for our small video production outfit and would not recommend if you are looking for fast storage. Yes, it's blazing fast at first, over 2300 MB/s on our workstations. But when you fill up the drives past 30% the read speed drops significantly, to a mere 400MB/s in our case. Their European customer support was really friendly and went as far as to replicate our situation on their machines. They concluded our unit was behaving as expected and that those speeds drops are normal. They suggested we swap the HDDs for SSD's. Right. Bought a qnap nas instead, very solid. We now use the areca as a backup for the qnap, so I guess it's not completely useless.

What would be an actually interesting test, @linustechtips get a 100TB Nimbus SSD and pop that into a laptop, also side note, the failure rate you're talking about is called the bathtub curve in failure rate analysis, gets the point across a little easier.
