The press I commented I was making a while back has taken a step back because of time and winter but I found a cylinder on some old farm equipment 10” throw and 6” diameter capable of 40 tons if I use a strong enough pump. Anyhow. The old equipment is made of 2-1/2” square tube that’s super thick and I’m Starting a 2x72. With it. Should be beefy and finally join the 2x72 gang. Nice things you got there!

    • CG Smithing

Nice to see the log splitter is working out for you. I comment I was going to make one a few weeks back if you remember. as it turns out it would be way too flexible and the cylinder was junk so I’m building one from scratch. I’m using an I beam that was at one point part of a Small bridge I believe. It’s so heavy I can’t move it without a skid steer that’s gonna be fun to move the press. It’s going to probably be 20-30 tons so I made a mistake but I’m happy with it because its just gonna be stronger. It will be a while because school is back and I need it get my garage wired with a 220v plug. Still want pictures when I finish?

      Justin Topp 2 months ago

CG Smithing will do! I’m getting it from the farm next week along with a horizontal bandsaw. It’s going to take a while to get all the parts and things because it’s complete but the motor and hydraulics are bad so I need new ones. Really just the frame and the cylinder are good I believe

Beauty I got the same splitter 🇨🇦 I think it was mentioned, but use a piece of plate for a pedal, and make the linkage out of ready rod, with the switch wired into it so 2x hands are free, but better yet you should send this to princess auto, they have a contest for investors for $$ in store fyi

If you have the time for a little more preparation, I have found that heating, slight untwist, then soak in muriatic acid for 24 hours provides a good clean start for forge welding instead of just burning out the gunk

    • CG Smithing
      CG Smithing 3 months ago

Perfect!!!! I can try that too!!! Thanx

  • Brian Rourke
    Brian Rourke 3 months ago

Yes a good concept. From an industrial Blacksmith of 47 years in the trade. Some tips. Take half the bite you are taking first up. 1/2" instead of 1 inch. When driving a drift in to a piece of steel a 1/2 in wide drift will penatrate twice the depth of a 1 inch. Drift. Then you progress to a larger tapered drift to drift out the hole. Pushing metal sideways not out. Pre heat your dies first. You will get twice as many presses on the first attempt. If it does not weld on the first attempt you are wasting you efforts. Same with the anvil first up put a piece of plate into forge heat it to cherry lay it on your Anvil. Other wise the Anvil sucks the heat out of your in seconds. In my shop by morning tea i can cook bacon and eggs on my anvil face or a piece of steak. You should be able to keep a piece of steel hot just by working it on a hot anvil. Hope this helps. TheSmithy.....!

You could get a foot switch and wire it in place of the push button. Then you can hold it down with your foot and work the lever with your left hand. However, i love the idea, and may try to adapt my 25t gas powered splitter

    • Piney Hollows Homestead
Piney Hollows Homestead 5 months ago

@CG Smithing im sure you could come up with a treadle switch, but just a simple on off, not a variable output like one for a tig rig or a sewing machine. Then fabricate mechanical linkage that works the drive lever.

A good way of doing the offset is to use a bending fork while tong is in the vice, this helps too. Well done'

@CG Smithing Yeah I have about three hand ones and I have a bending fork for the hardy hole, they are just so handy.

Nice Job, one tip I could give is have those nibs both the same on the same side, that way your stock can pass through if it has too. Well done, and Yes agree with Sam, that hammer looks too big, I can do most of my work with my top little 2lb rounding hammer.

Damn straight. Agreed on all tgose points. And when they are on the same side it can also be used for hammer making. Aka monkey tail tongs i believe

This is a great idea and I have seen this done before in person at the shop I work at I suggest attaching a little arm to your foot lever that contacts your button so that when your foot hits the ram it also hits the button making both hands available.

very cool mate. Must still be chilly in your neck of the woods, can see the cold steel sucking the heat out o the billet when it presses at the beginning, very awesome

Good Job, can you punch a hole through 3/8 plate my guess is it will do it like a hot knife through butter but may struggle much bigger, would love too see how thick a material it can get through

This is a really good proof of concept thank you for making this video! A foot petal would be perfect for the button and safety lever and would be a relatively easy and inexpensive modification. I look forward to seeing your other dies and modifications going forward! Cheers

Thanks for the great video. You answered two of my questions in one video. Would a smaller splitter like that work? And is there some way to set it up without having to totally redesign it? WANT!!!

Hell yeah! I've been meaning to try the same thing but have not wanted to waste the money if it didn't work. Great proof of concept. I would bypass the button though. Thanks!
