I’m going to try and make a live edge table without spending an arm and a leg on a slab. I’m just going to go to a lumber mill and get a piece of wood cut to the dimensions I want the do the channel through the middle and fill with colored epoxy. Heard it could be done with a router and this confirms it. Not too worried now.

    • Richard Martin
      Richard Martin 8 months ago

Vanity You can cut a channel with a router, just don’t go too deep at first. Make several small passes and lower the cutter a little each time and you should be fine. Good luck, I’d love to see the finished table.

    • Richard Martin
      Richard Martin Year ago

That’s a good idea Andy, I might have a go at one. The main problem would be getting the curve right on the wheels, my bandsaw isn’t precise enough for that. You’ve got my brain ticking on a possible solution though.

If you had kept the shark cut-outs you could also have used them as well. There is a stain that will fade and look weathered like wood will after years of weathering but it does this "weathering" in a very short time, like a few weeks. Something to consider although it might be costly. Might be worth the price and get many finishes out of one container if you can't find wood already weathered. Of course you can always just distress a finish you have already applied. Just some ideas I intend to use when I start making wall art. Thanks for sharing.

    • Richard Martin
      Richard Martin Year ago

Mark, the cut outs were all over the place. Maybe if I’d used a scroll saw I could have used them, but using that crappy Ryobi jigsaw put paid to that, they were useless. And I use pallet wood, so it’s usually pretty well weathered, plus I like the look that wax gives.
